Our Story · Baanhi

Empowering local artisans,
beginning with Assam.

In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru — and in homes across the US, UK, and beyond — there's a growing desire for objects that feel real: made by hand, tied to a place, and built to last. Not mass-produced, not anonymous. Baanhi was born for that desire.

01 / ORIGIN

Direct Partnerships.

We work directly with named artisan clusters — no intermediaries, no anonymous supply chains. Every piece traces its lineage to a specific cluster, a specific hand.

02 / CRAFT

Living Tradition.

Craft designed for modern homes — durable, beautiful, and made to be used every day, not just displayed.

03 / PURPOSE

Fair Livelihoods.

A model that is fair to artisans, honest to customers, and true to the craft — built to grow with the artisans it works with, not at their expense.

Bell Metal

Kansa, Hand-Hammered

In Sarthebari, metalsmiths beat bell metal — an alloy of copper and tin — into the thalis and glasses an Assamese meal is built on. A craft worked by hand over generations, and a registered Geographical Indication.

Handloom

Woven, Not Printed

Handspun cotton, thrown on a traditional loom, pattern by pattern — the same textile that breathes through a monsoon and holds warmth through winter. No two lengths of cloth are identical.

One weaver. One loom. One length at a time.

Baanhi founders — India

"Baanhi" means "flute"
in Assamese.

Why Assam first? Assam still has clusters where craft is part of daily life: kansa thalis that hold everyday meals, handwoven cotton that breathes in monsoon heat and winter cool, brass diyas that light evening puja year after year. We saw an opportunity to start here — to build a model that is fair to artisans, honest to customers, and true to the craft.

Our vision is larger than one state. Baanhi is designed to grow with artisans across India — and eventually, beyond. Every new region we enter will follow the same principles: direct partnerships with clusters, full traceability, and design for everyday life, not just display.

A bamboo flute, breath turned to music — that's what the word means, and what we want for every artisan we work with: a voice for their craft, their cluster, and their livelihood. When you choose Baanhi, you're not just buying décor. You're supporting a model where local artisans are partners, not suppliers — starting in Assam, and growing from there.
